People skills and technical knowledge are two skills that have fueled Don Schmerling's success as sales manager for Reliable Plating Works.

Whether it's a prospective client or a long-term one, direct communication is essential," Don says. "It allows me to identify their needs and answer their questions. My job is to understand what clients want and to make sure their products function correctly. For Reliable Plating Works, quality and customer service are always top priority."

A 20-year veteran of the plating industry, Don's background gives him a detailed understanding of the products and how they function, as well as a keen knowledge of corporate functions. After completing undergraduate work in engineering at Milwaukee School of Engineering, he earned a master's degree in business from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Don says he enjoys his work with Reliable, because a self-directed approach is valued and encouraged. The company trusts his expertise and empowers him to introduce fresh ideas and client development strategies.

As part of his role, Don markets products and services to the company's current nationwide client base and strives to add new customers to the rolls. A phone call and a visit often prove an effective entry point for new business. However, many new clients come through word of mouth, because of the stellar reputation RPW has built over the past nine decades.

Enthusiasm makes Don's work as enjoyable as it is challenging: "I love my job, " he says. "I love dealing with people."

In his free time, Don enjoys spending time with his family.
